Abstract: Accurate managed pressure drilling (MPD) is an international frontier technology to solve the drilling bottleneck of complicated pressure system, which can effectively control the complicated downhole conditions, such as well kick, leakage, collapse and stick. To meet China’s oil and gas development strategic demand and improve the country’s international competitiveness for drilling engineering technological service, CNPC Drilling Research Institute launched its independent research project and made important breakthroughs in accurate MPD process technology and equipment eight years later. The result is innovative in terms of theoretically technology and reaches the latest international level. It also leads the world in the areas of under-balanced MPD process, working condition simulation, and system evaluation. It has been successfully put into industrialized application and service in China’s Tarim, Huabei and Sichuan-Chongqing regions, completely replacing foreign products of the kind. The technological service fee is lowered by more than 70 percent as compared to foreign companies. The drilling bottleneck of “kick-leakage co-existence” is solved effectively with remarkable achievements in discovery and protection of reservoirs. The research team has also accumulated organizational and managerial experiences, including identification of correct research orientation, attraction of high-level technological talents, creation of qualified innovative team, making full use of laboratories and development of innovation culture.
