Abstract: A new round of technological and industrial revolution is sweeping the globe at the present time. Crossdisciplinary integration and synergetic effect of flourishing new technology provide the new opportunities for the petroleum industry to make cross-disciplinary innovation and technological integration. This paper introduces cross-disciplinary innovation practice of international petroleum majors and oilfield service giants, including typical cooperation with ICT and medical industries as well as the innovation mechanisms. Shell launched the Shell Techworks Project, aiming to use mature technologies of other industries for cross-disciplinary cooperation and accelerate transformation of the company’s technologies and solutions from the demonstration stage to the popularization and application stage. The healthy ecological system for innovation is the fundamental precondition for realization of cross-disciplinary innovation. The innovation encouragement culture and the management mechanism are the basic condition for promotion of cross-disciplinary innovation. Under the new situation, China’s petroleum enterprises should strengthen their cross-disciplinary innovation awareness, break closure and limitation of the petroleum system, improve basic management ability, share internal knowledge and data, encourage the innovation culture, and establish the new mechanism for cross-disciplinary innovation.
